BJJ gi size charts: read the measurements before choosing the label

Use the current chart for the exact gi model and storefront. A2 is a maker’s size label, not a universal measurement. Start with its body-height and weight guide, then check the garment dimensions and fit. Read the care and return terms before washing a gi you may need to exchange.

Sanabul’s Essential chart gives an A2 measurement of 172 cm. That number is the spread jacket’s cuff-to-cuff span, labelled A in its diagram. It is not the wearer’s height. Reading the right number under the wrong heading can produce a very precise mistake.

The same distinction applies when comparing brands. FUJI’s US All Around product displays body-height and weight ranges. Sanabul’s Essential product also links actual garment lengths. One helps identify the maker’s intended body range; the other helps compare the item with a garment measured at the same points. Neither makes A2 a shared standard between the two companies.

The explorer contains the complete published tables used here, checked October 22, 2026: the body-range chart shown on FUJI US All Around BJJ Gi White, and the inch and centimeter garment charts linked from Sanabul’s Adult Essential product. Keep the product, region, chart type, and units attached to every number. These are references for those product contexts, rather than a ranking of the makers.

  • A — the maker calls this “Sleeve Length.” Its diagram runs cuff-to-cuff across the spread jacket; it is not a shoulder-to-wrist body measurement.
  • B — trouser length: the diagram runs from the trouser top to the hem, not from the crotch.

The complete FUJI US body-range chart and Sanabul Essential garment tables are in the explorer’s native references above and remain available without JavaScript.

Start with the product page and the actual chart

Find the exact model before looking for a size. Record the maker, model name, storefront region, and the chart linked on that product. Check whether the maker has replaced or revised the item. A chart saved for another generation, cut, or regional listing may answer a different question even when the product name looks familiar.

In the FUJI example, the US All Around BJJ Gi White page displays a Men’s BJJ Gi chart. That is the context preserved in the explorer. The table should not be relabelled as every FUJI gi, a European listing, or a standard for other brands. If you are ordering elsewhere, open the chart on that actual listing.

A size appearing in a chart also does not establish stock in the chosen color or model. FUJI’s displayed chart includes A00, for example, while the product’s purchase options are a separate list. Confirm the size you can order rather than treating a reference row as an available item.

Keep a copy of the chart and the product details you used. If the listing changes or the seller asks which version you relied on, the saved context gives the question a clear starting point. It is more useful than a note saying only “I usually buy A2.”

Read height and weight together; read suffixes in that chart

A body-range chart gives the maker’s suggested range of wearers. It does not give the actual width or length of every part of the garment. Find both the height and weight columns, keep their units, and check the full row. A match in one column leaves the other column to resolve.

FUJI’s US chart makes the role of the suffix visible. Its A2 row lists 5′5″–5′9″ and 140–170 lb. A2L keeps the same weight range but changes the height to 5′10″–6′0″. A2H keeps the A2 height range and lists 170–190 lb. Those rows describe different published options, rather than a reason to assume that every maker’s L or H does exactly the same thing.

The rows can overlap. That is information to preserve, not a reason for a size tool to invent a single winner. FUJI’s A4 and A5 rows, for example, share a height range and overlap in weight coverage. Garment dimensions, the maker’s advice, and a fit question can still be needed after a person finds a plausible row.

If your height and weight point to different FUJI categories, its published instruction recommends the larger of the two sizes. Attribute that recommendation to FUJI. Before applying it to another product, read what that maker says about its own cut and measurements.

Separate body measurements from garment measurements

A garment chart describes the item itself. Sanabul’s Essential image labels A as sleeve length, B as trouser length, and C as jacket length. The arrows are essential: A runs cuff-to-cuff across the spread jacket. B runs from the trouser top to its hem, not from the crotch. C runs from the jacket top to the hem on the back view.

For Essential A2, Sanabul publishes A/B/C as 67.7/39.4/31.5 inches and 172/100/80 centimeters. These are the maker’s two published tables. The explorer preserves both sets rather than silently recalculating one from the other and replacing the maker’s rounding.

Do not compare that cuff-to-cuff value with the length of your own arm. Do not compare the trouser measurement with an inseam from another chart. The word “length” needs endpoints. Two figures using centimeters can still describe different parts of the clothing.

Sanabul also publishes a separate adult body-height and weight matrix for its listed models, including Essential. Its blank cells matter. This guide links that matrix rather than turning its plotted cells into rectangular A0–A4 ranges. Use the original matrix for its body guide and the Essential dimensions here for the garment question.

Give the maker a measurement question it can answer

Begin with current height and weight in the units the chart uses. Check whether the chart expects body values, garment dimensions, or both. If you convert units, keep the original and the conversion clearly labelled so the seller does not mistake one for the other. A kilogram value in a pounds column is a different order, not a rounding error.

If you already own a gi whose fit you like, compare it only at the points the new maker defines. Use the same jacket position and the same endpoints as the diagram. A familiar size label can be a note about that existing item; its actual measurements are the more specific comparison.

Record whether the existing gi has been washed and how you normally care for it. Ask whether the new maker’s dimensions describe the item before washing and what variation it allows. The chart alone does not answer an unstated tolerance or tell you how an older garment reached its present size.

When a needed measurement is absent, ask for it. A table giving height, weight, and overall length may leave chest, waist, hip, or thigh room unresolved. Ask the seller how it measures the relevant area and whether that information is available for the model and size. Do not manufacture a missing circumference by doubling a number whose meaning is unclear.

  • Name the model, storefront, and two sizes you are comparing.
  • State your body values with units and identify the chart you used.
  • If comparing another gi, give its measurement endpoints and washing history.
  • Ask about the missing dimension, the maker’s tolerance, and the return route before placing the order.

Try the fit before washing or practising in it

An initial fit check and a training session are different uses. Keep the garment clean and follow the seller’s conditions while deciding whether to keep it. Try the jacket and trousers as a set, with the clothing you intend to wear underneath where your academy permits it. Ask the instructor about a fit question before relying on an unfamiliar cut.

Check where the sleeves and trouser hems finish, whether you can close the jacket as intended, and whether the waist arrangement works. Notice a restriction when raising the arms, sitting, or bending the knees. These are observations to give the maker or instructor, rather than a reason for an online chart to certify the fit.

Sanabul’s fit guide uses cuff position around the wrist to distinguish its too-small, intended-fit, and larger examples. Read that as Sanabul’s consumer guidance for its product. It is separate from a competition inspector’s requirements and should not be transplanted into another maker’s chart.

FUJI’s US return terms say items must not have been washed, worn, soiled, or altered and must remain resellable as new. Its product chart also warns against washing or practising in an item you may return. If the fit is unresolved, contact the seller before changing the garment or taking it into class.

Treat washing claims as part of the product information

The word preshrunk does not settle every care question. FUJI calls its gis preshrunk but says this does not mean they cannot shrink. Its product-chart instructions recommend cold washing and hanging to dry and describe shrinkage of up to one inch with that method. That is FUJI’s published claim for its care guidance, not a measured result from our own test.

Sanabul’s Essential product recommends cold washing and hanging to dry for a fit that is right out of the bag. It also describes intentional heat shrinking. Those statements belong to that product. They do not create a universal shrinkage rate for another gi, a different fabric, or a different care process.

Before washing, read the sewn-in care label alongside the current model instructions. If the two conflict or the fit depends on an expected size change, ask the maker to resolve the question. Keep the answer. A plan to “shrink it a little” leaves open which dimensions will change and whether you will still be able to exchange it afterward.

The practical order is straightforward: check the new fit, resolve the measurement question, decide whether to keep the item, then follow its care instructions before training in it. Do not use a hot wash as a substitute for deciding whether the order is the right one. Once the item has changed, the original return option may no longer be available.

Separate everyday fit, event inspection, and weight class

A maker’s size label does not approve a gi for competition. IBJJF’s uniform page sets separate requirements for the garment, belt, measurements, permitted areas for patches, and condition. The actual event’s rules and inspection govern the kit you may use. A gi accepted at an ordinary class may still need a separate competition check.

This matters when reading a maker’s general fit illustration or an approved-color claim on a product listing. Check the precise variation you plan to buy, the organizer’s current document, and the fit of the garment on you. The letter and number on the tag do not establish sleeve length, trouser position, or every other inspection condition.

A2 also does not name a tournament weight division. Clothing size and competition entry answer different questions. If you are entering an event, follow its weighing procedure and required clothing; do not infer the entry category from your gi order. The weight-class guide explains that separate decision.

For a first purchase, ask your academy about its own clothing requirements and any loan for an introductory class. The what-to-wear guide covers that conversation. If a tournament is already booked, the first-event guide helps put kit inspection beside the actual registration and reporting steps.

Keep the exchange route open until the fit question is settled

Read the actual seller’s terms before checkout: the deadline, accepted condition, tags or packaging requirements, who pays return shipping, and whether an exchange depends on stock. Buying a maker’s product from another retailer does not automatically attach the maker’s direct-store return process to that order.

FUJI’s US page, for example, assigns return shipping to the customer and gives conditions for receiving the item back as new. Those terms make the pre-wash check consequential. The return route is part of the purchase comparison, even when the advertised price is the first number you notice.

A chart is useful because it narrows the question. It cannot supply an unlisted measurement, decide which cut you prefer, or promise that a future inspection will accept the item. When the remaining issue is specific, ask the seller before committing to a wash or alteration.

Keep the model, chart, order, and care instructions together. If the measurements and seller’s answer support the choice, you can make the order with a clearer record of what you are buying. If a needed detail remains unanswered, that is the detail to resolve before paying for a size label and hoping it does the rest.

Common questions

What does A2 mean in a BJJ gi size chart?

A2 is a maker’s size label. Its meaning comes from that product’s chart. On the FUJI US All Around page used here, A2 lists a body range of 5′5″–5′9″ and 140–170 lb. Sanabul Essential A2 also has published garment dimensions, which answer a different question. Do not treat A2 as a universal cross-brand measurement.

Should I choose a gi size by height or weight?

Check both against the exact maker’s chart. If the two point to different rows, use that maker’s guidance and ask about the unresolved fit. FUJI recommends the larger category in its published instructions; that advice should not be assumed for another brand or cut. Garment measurements can help make the remaining question specific.

What is the difference between A2, A2L, and A2H?

Read the rows in the model’s chart. In the FUJI US chart shown here, A2L changes the A2 height range while retaining its listed weight range; A2H changes the weight range while retaining the A2 height range. Those published values are more useful than assuming L and H have identical meanings everywhere.

Are women’s and men’s gi sizes interchangeable?

Use the chart attached to the cut you intend to buy. Makers can publish separate adult cuts and guides; the same label does not establish equal dimensions or fit between them. If a needed chest, hip, waist, or thigh measurement is absent, ask the maker how it measures that part and which information is available.

Will a preshrunk BJJ gi shrink?

Read the specific product’s care information. FUJI explicitly says preshrunk does not mean its gi cannot shrink. Makers’ washing instructions and shrinkage claims can differ. Do not assume a fixed percentage or use expected shrinkage to repair an unresolved size choice. Check the fit and return terms before washing.

Can I return a gi after washing it to check the fit?

Check the actual seller’s terms before washing. FUJI’s US return page excludes washed, worn, soiled, or altered items that cannot be returned as new. Another seller may have different conditions. Resolve the measurement question first; do not assume a wash is an approved part of trying the item for an exchange.

Does the right gi size mean it is competition legal?

No size label establishes competition approval. The organizer can inspect the actual garment’s measurements, material, color, condition, belt, and other requirements. Check the precise product variation and the current event rules. A maker’s consumer fit guide and an academy’s class permission are separate from that inspection.
