How to choose a BJJ gi: compare the whole purchase

Choose a BJJ gi your gym accepts, in a model and size you can check, at a delivered price you can afford. Read what comes in the package and what happens if it does not fit before paying. Fabric specifications help compare garments; they do not choose the right purchase by themselves.

The return policy matters most while the gi is still folded in its bag. Once you wash it, alter it, or take it to class, a fit problem may become your problem to keep. That makes the first purchase a sequence of decisions: establish what you need, compare complete offers, check the fit, then commit to using it.

The comparison below uses three named white adult-model listings from US storefronts, checked October 23, 2026. It puts their published specifications beside their purchase terms. These are selected references, not wear tests or a ranking. Prices belong to the named variants and date; size availability and checkout charges need a fresh check.

No option is automatically selected or ranked. The model references organize published facts; the buyer confirms the actual order.

Start with the class you are buying it for

Before opening a shopping tab, ask your gym what it requires for the sessions you plan to attend: permitted colors, academy branding, and whether you must buy through the school. Ask about an introductory loan gi if you have not settled on the class. Get the actual answer before buying patches or a uniform you cannot use there.

Identify the job: a first regular-class gi, a replacement in a known fit, or an event purchase. For a replacement, record the exact model, cut, and size that worked. A familiar brand name alone does not identify that garment.

The class clothing guide covers the wider kit question. If your schedule is mostly no-gi, settle the class-format choice before spending money on an assumed requirement.

Compare complete offers before comparing price tags

Keep the model name, color, regional storefront, and selected size on the same note as the price. A search result can lead to a different generation or a different country’s store. A product photograph can also contain a belt that is not part of the offer. Read the inclusion list; do not build a budget from the outfit on the model.

Use the same shopping basket for each option: jacket and trousers, any belt you still need, required academy additions, tax, delivery, and any import charge. Keep an unknown charge marked unknown until checkout supplies it. Comparing one item price with another delivered total gives you a tidy answer to the wrong question.

The examples retain each seller’s own conditions. A discount can still suit your budget, but a smaller product price does not settle its delivery or return cost. Save the final order summary and the policy you relied on. Those are more useful later than a screenshot of a crossed-out price.

Read the fabric numbers without inventing a performance test

GSM expresses fabric mass per square metre. It does not give the scale weight of the complete gi. A jacket specification and a trouser specification describe different pieces; a shipping weight is another number again. Keep the unit and the part of the garment attached whenever you compare them.

Weave names and density figures narrow the description. They do not establish how two finished garments will feel on you, how long either will last, or which dries first in your home. Cut, dimensions, construction, and your care routine still need attention. A page calling something lightweight is making a product claim, not supplying a comparative wear test.

If total kit weight matters for an event, ask about the actual size and use a scale with the required clothing. Do not add fabric-density figures together to estimate it. The weight-class reference explains why the organizer’s weigh-in instructions belong with that separate decision.

Give the size chart a specific question

Open the chart attached to the exact model. Work through its height and weight guidance, then inspect any garment measurements and their diagram. Do not transfer an A-size from another brand without checking. If you land between categories, tell the maker which measurements disagree and ask what its current cut provides.

The gi size-chart guide handles that reading process in detail. For buying, the extra question is what happens when only part of a set fits. Establish whether the seller offers another cut, separate pieces, or an exchange route. Do this before expecting a wash to shorten one dimension while leaving everything else alone.

When the order arrives, keep the labels, tags, and packaging while you assess it under the seller’s terms. If a measurement seems wrong, record it using the maker’s method and contact support. Resolve the fit question before doing anything that changes the condition required for a return.

Read the route back as carefully as the route to checkout

A return window needs a starting point and an action: delivery or purchase, a request or the item’s arrival. Check both. Then identify the permitted condition, excluded items, postage payer, processing deductions, and whether you receive money, store credit, or a replacement. “Easy returns” leaves most of those questions unanswered.

The seller has a reasonable interest in receiving an unused item it can sell again. The buyer has a reasonable interest in discovering a fit problem without an unexpected bill. Clear terms help both. Treat a prepaid label, a free exchange, and a fee-free refund as separate promises rather than interchangeable phrases.

If a policy appears inconsistent, ask the seller to resolve the exact order before you pay. Include the product link, size, destination country, and the outcome you want to understand. A general answer about the brand may miss a sale restriction or a regional exception.

For an event, check the actual uniform requirements

A manufacturer’s compliance claim does not perform the event inspection. IBJJF’s uniform page links its manufacturer manual and inspection requirements. The manual’s Juvenile, Adult, and Master section addresses fabric composition and construction alongside density; a single GSM figure cannot establish conformity.

Use the current document and your event’s instructions to check the exact garment, color, labeling, fit, and patches. Tell the seller which event you mean when asking about a model. Class permission and a tournament’s uniform inspection are separate decisions, even when the same gi is used for both.

If this purchase is for a first competition, work through the first-tournament guide as well. Settle clothing before making changes such as adding a patch, and leave time to resolve an ordering problem rather than treating the inspection desk as a fitting appointment.

Buy for the routine you can actually maintain

Check the garment’s washing and drying instructions against your class schedule and the facilities you have. The gi-care guide explains how to keep a model instruction separate from a brand-wide FAQ. If the required process does not fit your routine, solve that problem before ordering.

An additional gi is a separate budget choice. Start with the interval between classes, the care process, and how you will have accepted clothing ready for the next session. Do not buy a second one merely to complete a suggested shopping list; do not assume an unfinished wash-and-dry cycle will fit a tighter schedule by itself.

Keep the remaining option’s complete price, size answer, return route, and class acceptance together. That gives you a reason to buy—and a specific reason to wait when an essential answer is still missing.

Common questions

What is the best BJJ gi for a beginner?

Begin with what your gym accepts, then compare the exact model’s fit, complete cost, inclusions, and return route. A beginner label or a high review count cannot answer those questions for you. Keep the shortlist small enough to resolve its missing details before paying.

How much should I spend on my first gi?

Set a budget for the delivered kit, including anything required that the package leaves out. The dated examples show selected offers, not an average or a spending target. Check whether a discounted item changes your return options, and keep uncertain charges separate until checkout supplies them.

Does a BJJ gi come with a belt?

Read the exact inclusion list. A belt in a photograph is not an inclusion promise. The comparison records an expressly included belt, an expressly excluded belt, or an unanswered question separately, so you can budget for the actual package rather than assuming every set is complete for class.

Is a lower-GSM gi automatically better?

No. The figure describes fabric density, not a ranking or the complete uniform’s weight. Compare the relevant garment part and unit, then address fit, construction, your routine, and any event requirements. A lower number alone does not establish comfort, longevity, or drying time.

Should I buy a larger gi and shrink it to fit?

Resolve fit with the maker before depending on an expected change. A washing experiment may alter the item and affect its return eligibility. Ask about the model’s dimensions and alternative cuts first; use its actual care instructions once you decide to keep it.

Can I buy any white gi for an IBJJF tournament?

Color alone does not settle compliance. Check the current uniform documents and event instructions, including the actual garment’s construction, labeling, dimensions, and patches. Ask the seller about the exact model and event. A product-page approval claim is not the inspection itself.

Do I need two gis when I start?

Base that decision on the classes you actually plan to attend and the time needed to complete the garment’s care process between them. Price a second gi as an additional purchase, not an automatic beginner requirement. Confirm any loan option directly with your gym.
