IBJJF membership: documents, approval, and renewal

For an adult IBJJF membership, use the official application route and complete its document, approval, and payment stages. Then register separately for the championship. Check the athlete record and the event entry together before treating your tournament administration as finished.

A membership receipt is easy to save. The more useful question is what that receipt confirms. Before committing to a tournament, separate the work into a membership request, a current athlete record, and the championship entry you actually intend to use.

This guide follows the adult process and official pages checked October 23, 2026. The six references below give each task a place to start and something concrete to check before moving on. Keep personal details, document uploads, and payments inside IBJJF’s official services.

Membership process reference

Find the next membership task

Read all six situations below, or focus on the part you are handling. Each reference connects published instructions with practical checks. Open the official request to see its current status.

6 references shown.

Your choice stays on this page. Keep account details and documents in the official process.

Find the athlete record before starting again

You have competed or held membership before, but cannot reach the profile.

Published instruction
IBJJF directs returning athletes to recover their existing account instead of creating a duplicate.
Practical checks
  1. Start from the official account link. Keep old confirmation messages available privately while identifying the record.
  2. Write down which problem you have: forgotten login, inaccessible email, or an incorrect profile detail. Address that specific problem first.
  3. After access is restored, read the athlete history and current details before opening another membership request.
Before you move on
You can identify the record you intend to use. A new request and a new athlete record are different decisions.
Prepare the documents your request actually names

You are preparing a first adult application or a document resubmission.

Published instruction
IBJJF’s first-championship page says the required documents depend on the applicant’s supplied information.
Practical checks
  1. Make a private list using the document names shown in the request. Match each upload to a named requirement.
  2. If a membership form is requested, compare its fields with your intended athlete details before arranging the signatures.
  3. Check that each file opens, includes the whole relevant page, and is readable. Return to the request to inspect what was attached.
Before you move on
You have checked the actual upload list, rather than relying on a friend’s application or a general list of ID types.
Separate professor approval from IBJJF review

You have attached documents and want to understand what is still outstanding.

Published instruction
IBJJF reviews a complete request after the listed professor approves it.
Practical checks
  1. Read the current request status before sending a follow-up. Identify whether the unanswered item concerns a document or professor action.
  2. Ask the listed professor to check the matching request. Be specific about which application you mean, especially after making a correction.
  3. If the request shows a further instruction, follow that instruction or contact official support with the relevant status privately.
Before you move on
You can say which part needs attention. Sending the same general message to everyone is less useful than identifying the pending action.
Compare the date you have with the date you need

Your record needs attention and you are deciding between renewal and an information update.

Published instruction
An information-only update preserves expiry; renewal starts a new 365-day term from payment.
Practical checks
  1. Read the current expiry date and the dates of the event you are considering. Keep both in the same private note.
  2. Name the intended change: extending the term, correcting a profile detail, or both. Check the corresponding official instructions before proceeding.
  3. Review the displayed charge and resulting dates before payment. Reopen the record afterward to inspect the completed change.
Before you move on
You know whether you need more membership time or a corrected record. Compare that purpose with the option you selected.
Check a change of academy, professor, or rank

Your actual training affiliation or rank has changed since the recorded membership.

Published instruction
Belt, professor, and academy changes require the listed professor’s online approval.
Practical checks
  1. Compare the current record with the intended replacement details. Resolve the correct academy and professor with your instructor before confirming.
  2. Read every changed field together. A correct belt beside an unintended academy is still a record that needs attention.
  3. After the process finishes, inspect the membership and any separate event entry. Keep unresolved items distinct when contacting support.
Before you move on
The completed record shows the intended combination of belt, academy, and professor; you have separately checked any event you already entered.
Check the championship after membership is active

You are ready to enter an event or are checking an existing registration.

Published instruction
Membership must cover the event dates. Championship registration is a separate step.
Practical checks
  1. Open the intended event page and compare the event dates, available division, and registration deadline with your plan.
  2. Review the actual entry details and payment confirmation. Keep the membership receipt and event confirmation clearly labelled.
  3. Put the event’s correction dates in your calendar. Check the published athlete entry afterward, particularly if you changed membership information.
Before you move on
You have checked the actual championship entry. Membership payment alone does not reserve a place in a bracket.

Begin with the two records you need

IBJJF’s first-championship guide begins with active membership, followed by choosing and registering for an event. Keep those records distinct while working through the process.

Open the championship you are considering and keep its name and dates in view while dealing with membership. Label saved confirmations by what they concern. A document-upload message, a membership payment, and an event-entry confirmation answer different questions.

Use the explorer to focus on the unfinished part. You can also read every case in sequence. A useful stopping point is a specific unresolved action: the document to replace, the approval to follow up, or the event entry still to complete.

Use the document list generated for your application

IBJJF’s first-championship instructions say the document list depends on the applicant’s supplied information. Use the list in your request. A file accepted for a friend’s application is not a verified substitute for an item requested in yours.

The blank membership form currently linked by IBJJF contains name, address, contact and birth-date fields, plus belt, professor, and academy. It also has athlete and academy-head-instructor signature and date fields. Use that form when the request calls for it; the public file is not a complete upload checklist for every applicant.

Before arranging signatures, read the intended details together. Check the spelling of the name, the actual rank, and the academy and professor combination. A neatly scanned form with the wrong affiliation still leaves a correction to make.

For each requested upload, check that the file opens and the relevant page is whole and readable. After attaching it, inspect the uploaded item if the request allows. Keep the source file privately so a correction does not require recreating the document.

Minor athletes have a separate legal-guardian procedure described in the membership FAQ. Follow that route for a child rather than adapting this adult sequence.

Identify which approval is outstanding

The membership help page says the complete request and listed professor’s approval are required before IBJJF review. Read the current request status before deciding whom to contact.

A document problem and a professor action call for different follow-ups. If a file is missing or unreadable, deal with the file. If professor action is outstanding, identify the correct request when speaking with the listed professor. After a correction, make sure you are both discussing the same version.

When the next instruction is unclear, use official support. Describe the pending action and the status you see privately. A screenshot can help you explain a problem, but remove unrelated information before sharing it with anyone outside the official process.

Read the starting price and the actual charge

The rendered IBJJF membership overview, checked October 23, 2026, lists new membership starting at USD 45 per year and renewal starting at USD 40 per year. It advertises early-renewal discounts based on the time remaining, with a USD 15 minimum, expressly for IBJJF and USBJJ federations.

These are published starting prices. Read the charge shown for your actual request before paying. Keep the payment confirmation with the request it completes, and treat the championship’s entry price as its own budget item.

If you are comparing an early renewal with waiting, write down the current expiry, the proposed charge, and the resulting term shown in the process. That makes the decision about dates and money explicit. The training-cost guide helps keep event costs alongside the rest of your training budget.

Choose the change you actually need

IBJJF distinguishes an information-only update, which keeps the expiry, from renewal, which runs for 365 days from payment. The membership FAQ describes both routes.

Begin with the purpose. Do you need a longer term, corrected information, or both? Compare that purpose with the option selected before continuing. A familiar button is not enough reason to choose a process that does something different.

After completion, read the resulting record. Check the dates and the details that prompted the request. Keep any remaining problem separate from the part already resolved; that gives a support enquiry a clear scope.

Check academy, professor, and belt together

Belt, academy, and professor changes require the listed professor’s online approval, according to IBJJF membership help. Treat the intended combination as something to settle with your instructor before confirming the change.

The first-championship guide requires a registered academy and a listed instructor. If either is missing, settle the affiliation with your instructor before proceeding. Selecting a convenient substitute leaves the underlying question unanswered.

Make a private before-and-after note if several fields are changing. Re-read the completed record as a whole rather than checking only the field you most wanted to fix. Keep a pending membership correction distinct from a tournament entry that also needs attention.

If a rank change is blocked or your circumstances involve provisional registration, follow the relevant official instructions and support route. The belt-system guide explains the wider distinction between training rank and federation records. This page does not determine whether a promotion or academy transfer will be approved.

Return to the championship before calling the job finished

IBJJF’s championship help requires membership to stay active throughout the event dates. It also separates the Athlete Correction Deadline, Professor Correction Period, and Registration Checkday. Use the actual dates published for your event.

Put the relevant event dates in one calendar entry with the event link. If the entry is wrong, the registration-correction article organizes that follow-up. Compare the completed membership record with the intended championship registration, then inspect the actual entry. If you have changed rank or affiliation, do not assume that inspecting one screen has checked both records.

For travel planning, save the entry confirmation before treating the trip as settled. The first-tournament guide covers the wider preparation, and the IBJJF weight-class reference explains how to read the adult charts. Neither replaces the selected event’s instructions.

Keep the digital ID separate from entry confirmation

IBJJF’s November 2025 membership-app announcement describes access to the digital membership ID and the transition to fully digital membership cards from January 2026. Use the current official service to access the record.

Before leaving the administration behind, locate the current membership, the actual event confirmation, and the event page you relied on. Give each a useful name in your own files. You should be able to reopen the right item without reconstructing the whole application.

The goal is a completed, checked record and an entry you can identify. If something is still outstanding, name that one item and the person or official service that can resolve it.

Common questions

How do I apply for IBJJF membership for the first time?

Start from the official membership page. The references above organize the work into an account check, document preparation, professor follow-up, and a final event-entry check. Read the current instruction at each stage and inspect the resulting record before moving to the next task.

Which documents do I need for an adult application?

Use the upload list shown for your own request. If a membership form is requested, check its details and signature fields against that request. This guide identifies those fields without substituting a universal list of ID types for the actual requirements.

How long does IBJJF membership approval take?

The membership FAQ allows up to five business days after all documents and professor approval are received. Check the current request for outstanding action, particularly after a correction. Leave room before an event deadline rather than treating that review period as a guaranteed completion date.

How much is IBJJF membership?

The fee section records the official starting prices and conditional early-renewal terms checked October 23, 2026. Confirm the charge and resulting term displayed for your request before paying. Budget separately for the tournament you plan to enter.

Do I need renewal just to change my academy or belt?

Compare the official information-update and renewal routes described above. Identify whether the purpose is a corrected record, a longer term, or both. Confirm the completed details afterward, and separately inspect any championship registration affected by the change.

Does paying membership register me for an IBJJF tournament?

No. Open the intended championship and complete its registration process. Check the event confirmation and published entry, with the relevant event dates and division. The event-entry reference gives a practical order for those checks.

Should I create a new account if I cannot access my old one?

Use the recovery guidance linked in the account reference. Work out whether the issue is the login, the email you can reach, or a detail in the profile. Resolve access to the intended athlete record before starting another request.
