Dark Matter Jiu Jitsu/Ares BJJ Tempe was founded by Coach Korey Kerber, a black belt under Osvaldo “Queixinho” Moizinho of Ares BJJ. Korey brings over 14 years of training and more than a decade of coaching experience to the Tempe mats. His journey through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu includes competition at major events like Pans, Worlds, and American Nationals, but teaching has always been his main focus. The academy exists to help newcomers—especially those nervous about starting—find their footing in BJJ, with a step-by-step approach that emphasizes understanding and technical detail. The adult program offers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a schedule that includes morning, evening, and weekend classes six days a week. Fundamentals classes are designed for true beginners, while all-levels sessions allow more experienced grapplers to push themselves. Live rolling is part of every adult class, and competition preparation is available for those interested. Open mat sessions give students a chance to apply what they’ve learned in a less structured setting. Kids’ classes at Dark Matter are led personally by Coach Korey and welcome ages 5–14. The program blends structure with fun, aiming to keep young students engaged while building focus, discipline, and confidence. Parents from Tempe and the surrounding area trust the academy for self-defense and character development, with after-school class times making it accessible for busy families.
