BJJ X Yoga Studio in Chicago is built around the idea that martial arts and movement are lifelong practices for both body and mind. Head Jiu Jitsu instructor Jeff Yumul brings a deep respect for the art, shaped by years on the mat under world-class teachers like Bibiano Fernandes and Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles. Jeff earned his black belt under Pete “The Greek” Letsos, a senior black belt in the Carlson Gracie tradition, and leads the program with a focus on steady progress, practical skills, and respect for the roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Classes at the studio cover a wide range of training needs. Adults can train both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with fundamentals and all-levels classes designed to help students build a solid foundation and sharpen their technique. Judo is also part of the curriculum, and open mat sessions give students extra time to work on what they’ve learned. For younger grapplers, Rodolfo and Diego Santos—father and son with years of shared experience—run the kids’ BJJ classes, aiming to pass on discipline and confidence along with technique. BJJ X Yoga Studio also places a strong emphasis on overall well-being. Deanna Spear-Yumul, head yoga instructor, offers mixed-level yoga and specialized Yoga for BJJ classes, drawing on her background in dance and therapeutic movement. Her sessions are designed to be accessible and supportive, helping students of all ages recover, stay flexible, and keep their minds clear. This blend of martial arts and yoga creates a space where students can pursue both physical skill and personal balance.
