The Coop BJJ in Los Angeles was founded by David Telfer and Alex Chow, both black belts under Giva Santana, with a vision to create the world’s first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu co-op. Instead of a top-down structure, the academy is shaped by its members, who collectively guide the direction of the gym. With over thirty black belts contributing their knowledge, teaching responsibilities are shared, and the space operates on the simple principle that nobody owns the art—everyone is invited to play an active role, from leading workshops to organizing events. Training at the Coop centers on daily workshops run by advanced belts, structured open mats, and Q&A sessions focused on BJJ fundamentals. Most training is gi-based, including technical workshops, sparring, and fundamentals classes for adults. There is also a women’s no-gi workshop, and late-night training is available for those with busy schedules. For younger students, the academy offers a kids’ gi class, and girls ages 5–8 can join the Little sparKs program free of charge. The open format encourages learning from a variety of instructors and peers, allowing each practitioner to shape their own path. Membership at the Coop is flexible, with visitors and drop-ins welcomed. Promotion is handled collectively—if three Coop black belts agree a member is ready, promotion is granted, but students are also free to seek rank elsewhere if they wish. The gym values openness, diversity of experience, and the idea that training should fit the lives and goals of its members.
