Team Papakolea BJJ Academy

Team Papakolea BJJ Academy was founded in January 2005 by Professor Kaleo Auwae, a 6th Degree Black Belt under Grandmaster Relson Gracie. Born and raised in Papakōlea, Kaleo began training with Relson Gracie in 1994, during the early days of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s spread to Hawaiʻi. He established the academy with a clear purpose: to give back to his community by providing a place where youth and adults could develop discipline, confidence, and character through Jiu-Jitsu. The academy’s programs reflect the traditional Relson Gracie approach, focusing on strong fundamentals, technical precision, and respect for the art. Team Papakolea offers structured training for kids, teens, and adults, with both gi and no-gi classes available at their Honolulu locations in Papakōlea and Kakaʻako. Dedicated kids’ and adult classes are led by experienced coaches, and the curriculum is designed to guide students from beginner to advanced levels. Special family plans encourage parents and children to train together, reinforcing the academy’s belief that strong individuals help build strong families. Open mat sessions are available for adults, and drop-ins are welcome. Over the years, Professor Kaleo and his team have helped develop champions at every rank, but the academy’s greatest pride lies in its tight-knit ‘ohana of students and families who support each other on and off the mats. Team Papakolea remains committed to its mission: using Jiu-Jitsu as a lifelong practice to help people face challenges, grow in confidence, and carry the values of humility, perseverance, and respect into everyday life.
