Spectre Jiu Jitsu

Spectre Jiu Jitsu opened in Boise in 2019, founded by Derek Newton alongside Jake Durbin and Thomas Erickson. The academy traces its lineage to Professor Gustavo Rodrigues, a fourth-degree black belt who began training in Santos, Brazil under Master Elcio Figueiredo in 1995. Rodrigues, known for his technical approach and early mentorship of notable grapplers, relocated to the U.S. in 2007 and established his own school in Salt Lake City. This connection shapes Spectre’s curriculum and coaching philosophy, emphasizing disciplined technique and progressive skill development. Derek Newton leads the Boise school as head instructor and holds a second-degree black belt. Newton is supported by three other black belts—John Laird, Jake Durbin, and Johnny Kowalski—who contribute to a consistent teaching standard across the academy. The instruction focuses on building fundamentals before advancing through more complex positional strategies and submissions, with classes structured for various age groups including dedicated kids’ programs. Located on North Maple Grove Road, Spectre Jiu Jitsu offers wheelchair-accessible facilities and maintains a schedule that accommodates both gi and no-gi training. The academy encourages regular open mat sessions and private lessons, providing students with opportunities to refine their skills outside of structured classes. This setup reflects the school’s commitment to steady progression and technical mastery within the Boise BJJ scene.
