Self Reliant Jiu Jitsu is led by Jonathan Andrew Thomas, a world champion black belt who traces his lineage through the Mendes brothers, ten-time IBJJF world champions known for their technical and dynamic style. Andrew opened the academy in 2022 after moving to Boise with his family, bringing years of high-level competition experience, including multiple IBJJF Pan-American and No-Gi World titles. The academy’s inception followed a unique journey that began in Andrew’s garage during the 2020 shutdown, where he continued training and competing at an elite level before establishing a dedicated space for jiu-jitsu in Southeast Boise. The academy focuses on competition-oriented jiu-jitsu, emphasizing disciplined, rigorous training as a path to self-improvement and athletic excellence. Classes are organized by skill and age, offering separate fundamentals, intermediate, and advanced sessions for youth, alongside adult classes in both gi and no-gi formats. Private lessons supplement group instruction, and open mat sessions provide additional training time. The curriculum supports athletes aiming for tournament success as well as those seeking steady progress through structured learning. Self Reliant Jiu Jitsu occupies a modern facility featuring 1,400 square feet of white mats, designed to maintain high standards of health and cleanliness. The academy includes amenities such as private dressing rooms, showers with provided toiletries, towel service, filtered water, and a new HVAC system. These details reflect a commitment to creating a professional environment where technical development and personal growth are the primary focus.
