Sergio Penha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Sergio Penha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Sergio Penha, one of the few 8th-degree red and white belt practitioners worldwide and the only one based in Las Vegas. Sergio also holds a black belt in judo under Osvaldo Alves, a legendary figure in Brazilian martial arts. His competitive career began in the 1980s with multiple Rio de Janeiro State Championships, and he gained his black belt in just three years, notably bypassing the brown belt entirely—a rare accomplishment. With over four decades of coaching experience, Sergio has developed a teaching style that adapts to a wide range of student abilities and has guided more than 25 black belts, including early training for several world and UFC champions. Training at the academy follows this inclusive approach, offering gi classes for adults and children that emphasize discipline, persistence, and technical development. The kids’ program focuses on building confidence and work ethic, while adult classes integrate these values alongside physical conditioning and mental toughness. Open mat sessions are available regularly for all students to drill and spar beyond structured class times. The academy’s schedule includes morning and evening classes Monday through Saturday, accommodating different training needs throughout the week. Located on Schiff Drive, the facility is wheelchair accessible and designed to welcome drop-in students. This setup reflects Sergio’s commitment to making Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu accessible and effective for practitioners at various stages, whether they are stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for competition.
