Ralph Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Bend is led by Paul Moresi, a black belt under Ralph Gracie and the first Gracie black belt in Oregon. Paul’s journey began as a neighbor and family friend of Ralph Gracie in the Bay Area, where he eventually dedicated himself to training under Ralph and earned his black belt in 2015. After competing successfully at high levels and continuing his own training in San Francisco, Paul brought his experience and the Gracie tradition to Bend, honoring his family’s Oregon roots and passion for the outdoors. The teaching staff brings together a range of backgrounds and decades of mat experience. Black belts Andrew Winge and Matt Juarez, along with seasoned instructor Orell Moreno—who earned his black belt under Carlson Gracie Jr.—contribute to a depth of instruction in both traditional gi and no-gi. Instructors like Kris Morgan and Steve Kaneda, both brown belts under Paul, help run classes and have played an active role in developing the kids’ program and fostering a technical, disciplined training environment. The focus remains on solid fundamentals, strong positional jiu-jitsu, and giving students the context behind every movement. Training at the academy covers adult gi and no-gi classes, women’s BJJ, and a full slate of open mats and private lesson options. The kids’ program features both regular and competition-focused classes, with an emphasis on discipline, confidence, and physical challenge. A striking class is also available for those interested in expanding their skills beyond grappling. The gym welcomes drop-ins and offers wheelchair accessibility, reflecting a practical approach to making jiu-jitsu available to more people in Bend.
