Mission Jiu Jitsu

Mission Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Marcelo “Bob” Lucena, a 5th degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. Professor Bob began training in 1993 at the original Barra Gracie academy in Brazil, where he earned his black belt in 2000. He was part of the Barra Gracie team during its multiple world championship wins and trained alongside well-known figures like Renzo Gracie, Gordo, and Roger Gracie. Marcelo also competed internationally, representing Brazil at the 1995 Pan American championship in Irvine, CA, and at the inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. He has been teaching in California for over eight years, bringing more than three decades of experience as a competitor and instructor. The academy’s approach balances traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with modern techniques to provide students a solid foundation in the art. Mission Jiu Jitsu offers a range of classes for all ages, including gi and no-gi training for kids, teens, and adults. Their curriculum includes self-defense classes and competition preparation, allowing students to progress at their own pace while developing confidence and practical skills. Women’s classes and programs for younger children emphasize both physical conditioning and awareness, with a focus on safety and discipline. Located in Mission Viejo, the academy maintains a schedule that supports regular training across different age groups and skill levels. Drop-in students are accepted, and the facility is wheelchair accessible with parking available. With a lineage tracing directly back to the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mission Jiu Jitsu aims to teach effective self-defense and build strong relationships through the art, guided by Professor Bob’s long-standing dedication to continual learning and teaching.
