Jiu Jitsu Performance Academy in Apex, North Carolina, is led by Professor Sean Spangler, a fourth-degree black belt who brings decades of experience on the mats. Spangler started his martial arts journey as a wrestler at NC State before moving into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of John Lewis, Andre Pederneiras, Marc Laimon, and Robert Drysdale. He earned his black belt from Drysdale in 2009 and has built the academy around the principle of “simple and efficient” jiu-jitsu. Since opening his first school in Cary in 2014 and later relocating to Apex, Spangler has focused on helping students of all ages and backgrounds find their stride in BJJ, with a special passion for teaching kids and beginners. The coaching team includes several black belts, each with their own story in martial arts. David Wolf draws on his wrestling background and years of dedication to BJJ, while Conrad Faust brings experience from both American and European grappling circles. John Blair and assistant coaches like Jeremy Conroy add depth, each teaching classes and working with students at every stage of their journey. The academy values discipline, perseverance, and camaraderie, and these values show up in the way classes are taught and how students support one another on and off the mats. Training at the academy covers a wide range of programs. Adults can find both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with classes for all levels—including a dedicated fundamentals program and a “Godfathers” class for students over 45 and newcomers. There’s also judo, wrestling, and open mat sessions throughout the week. Kids’ classes start as young as age five, with both gi and no-gi options, and judo is available for children as well. The schedule is set up to make training accessible for families, and drop-ins are welcome. The academy’s approach is straightforward: experienced instructors, practical training, and a place where students can develop at their own pace.
