At Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu, students walk onto the mats led by Master Luiz Palhares, an 8th degree red and white belt with decades of experience in both teaching and competition. Master Palhares has taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to military units, including the U.S. Navy SEALs and Special Forces, as well as local law enforcement, bringing real-world knowledge and a deep sense of tradition to every class. The academy has been a steady presence in Jacksonville since 2008, and the curriculum follows the classic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu approach—focused on solid fundamentals, self-defense, and technical progression. Classes are organized by experience level, with separate sessions for beginners and advanced students in the gi. There’s also a structured kids’ program led by Professor Pedro Palhares, helping younger students build discipline and confidence from an early age. Open mat sessions are a regular part of the schedule, giving adults and more experienced students time to train freely and work on their own techniques. The academy also offers private lessons for anyone looking to sharpen specific skills or prepare for competition. While Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the heart of the school, students have access to additional training in judo, boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling, all taught by professional coaches. The gym is wheelchair accessible and has parking available. Drop-ins are welcome in most classes, and the atmosphere is rooted in tradition—students learn directly from instructors with a strong connection to the original Gracie lineage.
