At Impact Jiu Jitsu Albuquerque, students will notice right away that teaching is the top priority. Head coach and owner Benjamin Henning has been training since 2001 under Impact Jiu Jitsu founder Michael Chapman and earned his black belt from Chapman in 2020. Ben’s coaching style is shaped by years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, judo, and wrestling, and he’s been teaching since 2003. The focus here is on building real skill and understanding, with the goal of helping every student develop both technical ability and a clear sense of how to apply what they learn. The academy’s foundation is the Impact Jiu Jitsu lineage, which traces back to Michael Chapman—a black belt under Chris Haueter, one of the original “Dirty Dozen” American black belts and a student of Rigan Machado. Impact’s approach is technical and detail-oriented, aiming for students to not just memorize moves but to truly understand the art. Classes are structured for progression, with a fundamentals program for beginners and more advanced sessions for experienced grapplers and competitors. Open mat time gives everyone a chance to experiment and refine their game. Kids’ programs are a big part of the schedule, with classes broken down by age: Minis (3–4), Little Rollers (5–7), and Junior Grapplers (8–12). Each group has a curriculum matched to their stage, from basic movement and coordination for the youngest, to fundamentals and age-appropriate submissions for older kids. The Junior Grapplers follow a version of the adult blue belt curriculum, setting a solid foundation for teens who want to keep advancing. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Whether someone is looking for a place to start their BJJ journey or to push further into competition, Impact Jiu Jitsu Albuquerque offers a straightforward, technical, and honest approach to training.
