Invictus Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Academy in Albuquerque was founded and is led by Professor Rick Mitchell, a third-degree black belt under the Fadda lineage and the Cascao affiliation. A lifelong martial artist, Rick started in kickboxing at age six, wrestled competitively, and has over twenty years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He built Invictus as a response to the intimidating atmosphere he saw in many fight gyms, focusing instead on control, safety, and genuine growth for students from all walks of life. The academy has been a fixture in Albuquerque for over a decade, with a coaching staff that includes nine BJJ black belts and five ranked Muay Thai Krus, including several women professors and coaches. Classes at Invictus cover a full spectrum of grappling and striking. Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is taught in gi, with structured fundamentals, open mats, and competition-focused sessions led by experienced coaches such as Professor Clem Narvias, who brings a strong wrestling background to the mats. The academy also runs a wrestling program and offers no-gi and sparring opportunities. Muay Thai is available for both adults and kids, taught by coaches with decades of experience and competitive backgrounds. For women, there are dedicated BJJ classes and open mats led by women professors and professional fighters like Coach Meaghan Penning and Coach Liz Gravagne, providing a focused space for skill development and empowerment. Invictus also places a special emphasis on practical self-defense, with techniques trusted by local law enforcement. The kids’ program, led by Professor Jason Cunius, is known for its structure and positive impact on discipline and confidence. Nutrition coaching is included with most memberships, and the academy welcomes drop-ins, including free training for out-of-town visitors. With a culture that prioritizes safety, respect, and progress over ego, Invictus has built a lasting presence in Albuquerque’s martial arts scene.
