Highstyle Jiu Jitsu was founded in the heart of Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood to create a different kind of training space—one that deliberately steps away from the high-pressure, competitive culture often found in martial arts gyms. Located in Blagden Alley, the academy was built to be a sanctuary where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or athletic experience. The founders placed a strong emphasis on trust and safety, establishing a clear policy of maintaining a space free from law enforcement personnel to ensure that every member feels secure and respected. The coaching team brings together a range of expertise from both grappling and striking arts. Ben “Jammin,” a DC native and black belt under Weiss Sakhizada of Sucker Free Jiu Jitsu, leads the instruction with years of experience as a competitor, referee, and teacher since 2016. He is joined by Nick Coviello, who began his martial arts journey at age 12 and now brings his experience from competing and teaching throughout the DMV. Judo instruction is led by Devin “Grito de Lares,” a first-degree black belt in judo, certified coach through USA Judo, and a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Relson Gracie. Rounding out the team is Luz, who heads Muay Thai and Haitian fencing classes, integrating over a decade of yoga and community organizing into his teaching. Training at Highstyle covers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, and Haitian fencing, with an emphasis on personal growth and adaptability. Classes are designed to be inclusive and flexible, supporting students at any stage of their martial arts journey. Monthly Tire Manchèt circles introduce students to Haitian machete fencing, while all striking and grappling classes encourage mindfulness and self-development. The academy’s mission is to foster a supportive environment where martial arts serve as a tool for empowerment, fitness, and connection.
