Estilo Jiu Jitsu was founded and is led by Professor Luis Pantoja, a third-degree black belt with nearly 20 years of teaching experience and a competitive record that stretches back to the early 2000s. Luis received his black belt in 2009 under Mario and Fernando Yamasaki and Francisco Neto of the Yamasaki Academy, and he has deep roots in the Washington, DC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene—having started the city’s very first BJJ program under the Yamasaki banner. His approach to instruction blends foundational, battle-tested techniques with a strong emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking, encouraging students to actively engage with each position and transition on the mat. Classes at Estilo are intentionally kept small to allow for focused, hands-on guidance and a personalized training experience. The academy offers structured instruction in both fundamentals and advanced BJJ, with additional programs for women and kids. Luis is joined by a team of coaches including first-degree black belt Josh Hernandez, who also brings a Judo black belt and a technical, fluid teaching style, and Sara F., the academy’s co-founder, who leads women’s and kids’ classes with a collaborative, adaptive approach. Wrestling fundamentals are also part of the curriculum, taught by John G., who has a strong background in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Kids’ programs are divided by age, with dedicated classes for both younger children and juniors, and are designed to make Jiu-Jitsu accessible and fun while grounding students in essential principles. The academy regularly hosts seminars with visiting world-class competitors, giving students access to diverse perspectives and up-to-date techniques. Estilo Jiu Jitsu’s training philosophy is symbolized by its octopus logo—a nod to adaptability, intelligence, and creativity, qualities that the coaches aim to develop in every student. The school is wheelchair accessible and welcomes visitors interested in trying a class.
