Gustavo Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Sarasota (BJJ-SRQ) is led by Professor Justin McQuown, a second-degree black belt under Gustavo Machado. Justin’s journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 2000, with a foundation in military defensive tactics, and grew into a passion for traditional BJJ after years of service in the military and global security. He earned his black belt from Professor Machado in 2018 and moved to Sarasota to dedicate himself fully to teaching. Justin’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that BJJ shapes character both on and off the mats, and he aims to guide students toward becoming black belts in life as well as in the art. The Sarasota academy is part of the Gustavo Machado lineage, which traces directly back to Mitsuyo Maeda, the Gracie family, and Professor Roberto “Gordo” Correa. The instructional team includes Professor Luan Andrei Albuquerque, a first-degree black belt under Roberto Correa and Márcio “Pé de Pano” Cruz. Luan brings international competition experience, including an IBJJF American National No-Gi championship, and a deep background in both gi and no-gi grappling. This blend of technical pedigree and competitive insight shapes the day-to-day curriculum. Classes at BJJ-SRQ are structured for all experience levels, with a focus on technical progression, self-defense, and competition preparation. The academy offers both gi and no-gi training, following the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu structure while incorporating elements from instructors’ diverse backgrounds. Students train alongside instructors who have lived the art at every level, from foundational skills to high-level sport competition. The academy is wheelchair accessible and welcomes new visitors to experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in downtown Sarasota.
