In Oceanside, EXCEL Jiu Jitsu MMA & Fitness is led by Professor Michio Grubbs, an IBJJF-certified 4th degree black belt with over two decades of teaching and competitive experience. Professor Michio began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey under Roy Harris in 1999 and received his black belt from Chris Haueter in 2009. His background includes extensive training in wrestling, judo, and MMA, as well as experience as a professional bodybuilder. Michio’s leadership is supported by a team of instructors with deep roots in both grappling and striking arts, including Professor Derek Flesher, Professor Djavan Coleman, Professor Eric Charriere, and Professor Laurynn Garcia, each bringing their own expertise in wrestling, judo, and striking to the mats. Excel’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for adults covers both gi and no-gi formats, with classes ranging from fundamentals to advanced sparring. The schedule features dedicated sessions for gi, no-gi, and specific sparring, along with open mats that welcome drop-ins. Professor Michio is hands-on in both teaching and running the competition team, while instructors like Professor Derek and Professor Djavan incorporate wrestling and MMA perspectives into their lessons. Private lessons and specialized workshops are also available for students seeking focused instruction or preparing for competition. Youth programming is a major part of the academy, starting with Tiny Tots classes for children as young as four and progressing through age-specific groups up to 13. The kids’ curriculum emphasizes discipline, teamwork, and foundational skills, with pathways for those interested in competing. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Excel offers classes in MMA, boxing, and kickboxing, creating a full-service martial arts environment for families and individuals alike. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and visitors are welcome to observe or join a class during regular hours.
