Devine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Daniel Island is headed by Tom Sheehan, a first-degree black belt under Scott Devine. Tom’s career spans over 25 years in federal law enforcement, including service with the United States Secret Service and Federal Air Marshal Service. Alongside Scott Devine, he helped develop the Secret Service’s ground fighting program, bringing a practical, real-world approach to both defensive tactics and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction. His teaching is marked by a laid-back but detail-oriented style, shaped by years of training agents and civilians alike. The coaching staff also features black belts Josh Williams—whose background blends wrestling, MMA, and Jiu-Jitsu competition—and Travis Maynard, who earned every belt from Tom after beginning at Gracie Barra in Alabama. Emily Zeller, promoted to black belt in 2025, adds a pressure-heavy grappling style and a focus on control. The academy’s programs are built around traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, offering both gi and no-gi classes for adults and children. Kids are grouped by age (6–8 and 9–12) and train fundamentals in both formats, while adults can join all-levels and fundamentals classes in gi and no-gi. The curriculum emphasizes core concepts—leverage, pressure, and control—over isolated moves, helping students adapt to a variety of situations. Women’s self-defense classes and recovery-focused yoga are regular parts of the schedule, reflecting a belief in practical skills and lifelong health. Respect, safety, and a team-oriented mindset are at the heart of daily life on the mats. The instructors maintain a family-friendly environment, with clear rules that prioritize hygiene, humility, and support for new students. Drop-ins are welcome, and open training sessions give members extra time to practice or roll. The academy’s roots in law enforcement and competition, combined with a decade-plus of local instruction, shape a culture where hard work and learning go hand in hand.
