Deep Waters Jiu Jitsu

Deep Waters Jiu Jitsu opened its doors in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, on April 17, 2017, under the guidance of Professor Hélio Soneca. The academy was established with the backing of several long-time black belts who remain active on the mats, linking the school directly to the traditional roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The founders envisioned a place where Jiu-Jitsu serves not only as a martial art but as a means for physical, mental, and spiritual growth, reflecting the discipline’s deeper values. Students at Deep Waters train in a range of classes that include both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, alongside judo to complement grappling skills. The academy offers structured programs for adults, from beginner fundamentals to open mat sessions that encourage sparring and technique refinement. Children five and older have dedicated gi classes, including a homeschool program, ensuring age-appropriate instruction and progression. The schedule also features monthly open mats to foster extra training opportunities.
