Colorado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Satori was founded by Professor David Ruiz, a 5th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with a long history on the mats. The head instructor, Professor Sean Stewart, is an IBJJF certified 3rd degree black belt who leads a team of experienced coaches including Teri Stewart, Gregg Stephenson, and Scott Dye. The academy’s teaching philosophy is straightforward: make quality jiu-jitsu accessible to a range of students, from those seeking fundamentals and self-defense to athletes preparing for major tournaments. The coaching staff takes pride in developing skill and character in every student, building on decades of experience in both teaching and competition. Classes at Satori cover the full spectrum of gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Beginners find a foundation in fundamentals and self-defense sessions, while advanced students have dedicated intermediate/advanced classes in both gi and no-gi formats. The gym balances technical instruction with plenty of live training, offering regular takedown, striking, and open mat sessions. Kids are brought into the fold early, with Little Lions classes for those nine and under, and Young Athletes classes for older children and teens. Women’s-only classes are also a staple, providing a focused environment for female students. The competitive side of the academy is more than just talk. Satori’s athletes have recently taken home major wins: Steve Haddock won gold at the 2026 IBJJF Pan Jiu Jitsu Championship, Rebekah Nguyen claimed absolute champion at the 2026 IBJJF Denver No-Gi Open, and Shastin Michelle earned silver at the 2024 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds. These results reflect a training room where recreational students mix with serious competitors, all under the guidance of instructors who are invested in both personal progress and high-level performance.
