Checkmat Temecula BJJ

Checkmat Temecula BJJ is led by Professor Helio Barthem, a fourth-degree black belt under Master Leonardo Vieira, co-founder of the Checkmat team. Since opening in early 2019, Professor Helio and Professor Larissa Barthem have built the academy around decades of technical expertise and a straightforward mission: to help each student become stronger and more confident through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The school represents the Checkmat tradition in Temecula, combining high-level instruction with a clear, supportive approach for all ages and skill levels. Adult students at the academy train in a structured progression, beginning with the Beginners Program and Essentials classes in the gi, and advancing through specialized sessions such as Advanced Training, Evolution, and the Modern BJJ LAB. For those focused on competition or refining their skills, the curriculum includes both traditional gi and no-gi classes, as well as open mat times that welcome drop-in visitors. The teaching emphasizes practical self-defense, technical development, and proven competition strategies drawn from the Checkmat lineage. Young grapplers have their own pathway, with Kids 1 and Kids 2 classes introducing fundamentals, and Kids Competition and Kids No Gi sessions providing a bridge to more advanced training. The academy places a strong focus on discipline, teamwork, and problem-solving, with an environment designed to help children build confidence and real-world skills. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the schedule offers a variety of class formats to accommodate different training goals and experience levels.
