Upstream Jiu Jitsu

Upstream Jiu Jitsu is led by a black belt who began training in mixed martial arts in 2008 and steadily competed through every belt level in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After years of coaching MMA fighters and boxers, the instructor focused fully on Jiu-Jitsu starting in 2020 and earned a black belt in early 2024. This long journey shapes the way classes are taught here, emphasizing the positive impact Jiu-Jitsu can have on people’s lives. Classes at Upstream are held mainly in the gi, though students may choose to wear no-gi attire if they prefer. The schedule offers weekday sessions in the mornings and evenings, all open to adults at any skill level. Saturday mornings include an open mat from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., welcoming practitioners from all schools for both gi and no-gi training. The academy’s location on North Hewitt Road in Ypsilanti is wheelchair accessible. Training focuses on building fundamentals and progressing naturally through the art, guided by someone who has competed extensively and coached across multiple disciplines. Upstream keeps the environment straightforward, with drop-in classes available alongside monthly memberships that cover all sessions. The school’s approach reflects the instructor’s belief in passing on the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu with clear, consistent teaching.
