The Jiu Jitsu Institute in Wilmington, NC, was founded in 2018 by Gil Alcocer, whose journey in martial arts began at age 7 and continued through a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, military service, and eventually to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of the Mendes brothers in California. Gil earned his brown belt in 2014 and received his black belt from Gui Mendes shortly after opening the academy. He built the school to share not only technical Jiu-Jitsu but also the lessons in discipline, confidence, and personal growth that the art offers. Classes at the academy are structured to engage students of all ages and backgrounds, with a focus on strong fundamentals and technical excellence. The adult program features gi and no-gi training, along with open mat sessions and dedicated rolling times for all levels. For younger students, the schedule includes both gi and no-gi classes, led by a team of instructors who specialize in different age groups. Multiple coaches are present on the mats to provide hands-on instruction and individual attention, ensuring that each student can progress at their own pace. Cleanliness and safety are top priorities at The Jiu Jitsu Institute, with the facility kept in meticulous condition for daily training. The academy welcomes visitors and drop-ins, and offers wheelchair access. With a team-oriented approach, the staff encourages students to challenge themselves, develop camaraderie, and even consider teaching in the future. The school aims to be a place where families and individuals alike can find a lasting connection to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Wilmington.
