Subconscious BJJ was founded in North Hollywood by Brent Burniston, who earned his black belt under the legendary Jean Jacques Machado. The academy’s roots draw from some of the most respected names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with association director Nic Gregoriades holding his black belt from Roger Gracie. These connections to both the Machado and Gracie lineages shape the school’s approach and technical depth, fostering a training environment grounded in decades of experience and championship-level instruction. The academy offers a fundamentals program that focuses on the essentials of offense and defense, emphasizing self-defense techniques alongside core positional work. Adult classes are open to students 16 and older, while kids’ classes welcome children from age 4 through 15, ensuring a clear path for young practitioners to progress. Private training is available by appointment, and open mat sessions give members the chance to experiment, troubleshoot, and roll outside of structured class times. Subconscious BJJ’s instructors are active competitors, with students regularly appearing on the podium at tournaments ranging from local events to major IBJJF and NABJJF championships. Training takes place six days a week at the North Hollywood headquarters, which is wheelchair accessible. The academy’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that jiu-jitsu should be internalized and instinctive—echoing the words of Helio Gracie that learning jiu-jitsu is something for the subconscious. This mindset, combined with a strong sense of camaraderie and technical lineage, defines the daily experience on the mats.
