Straight Blast Gym Portland - BJJ & MMA Gym has been part of Oregon’s martial arts scene since 1992, founded by Matt Thornton—the state’s first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. SBG Portland is the original headquarters of the international SBG organization, which now spans more than 50 locations worldwide. Thornton’s influence extends far beyond Portland, having helped shape early professional MMA in the region and produced Oregon’s first BJJ world champions. The academy’s lineage includes well-known coaches such as John Kavanagh and Karl Tanswell, with SBG athletes having competed at the highest levels of the sport. Training at SBG Portland covers a full range of martial arts, with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at its core alongside classes in MMA, Muay Thai kickboxing, boxing, and self-defense. The gym’s program structure is built around fundamental principles that apply to everyone, from young children to experienced competitors and working professionals. Children’s programs start as young as age 4, and there are specialized classes for ages 4–7 and 8–11, as well as women’s self-defense. Adult students can participate in both gi and no-gi BJJ, striking, and MMA sessions, with a curriculum designed to build practical skills and real-world confidence. SBG Portland prides itself on a straightforward, principle-driven approach to teaching. The coaching staff emphasizes individual progress and functional technique, supporting students whether their goals are competition, fitness, or personal development. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the training environment reflects the gym’s long history of serving everyone from complete beginners to seasoned fighters.
