Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu Portland is led by Aaron Milam, a black belt under Rey Diogo and John Danaher. Aaron opened the academy in 2013 with the goal of bringing high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Portland, drawing on years of study in both traditional and modern grappling systems. The team at RGA Portland reflects this depth, with instructors and athletes who have dedicated themselves to the art and who value both technical growth and mutual respect on the mats. Training at the academy is structured around a balanced curriculum that blends the best aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and wrestling. Adult students start with BJJ 101 and Gi Fundamentals, which emphasize detailed instruction, drilling, and positional sparring. As students progress, they move into intermediate gi and no-gi classes, with equal focus on standing technique and groundwork. The academy offers both gi and no-gi formats throughout the week, making it possible for grapplers to develop a complete skill set. Youth programs are split by age, with gi classes for ages 5–7 and both gi and no-gi options for kids 8 and up. These classes mix games, discipline, and real technique, aiming to build character as well as athletic ability. There is also a dedicated women’s class that follows the same fundamentals curriculum in an all-women environment, providing a comfortable entry point for new students. The facility includes a strength and conditioning area, and drop-ins are welcome for most classes.
