Shogun West Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Shogun West Brazilian Jiu Jitsu began with a vision shared by three brothers-in-law during a road trip in late 2021. Rooted in their faith and family values, they set out to build a place on Rochester’s west side where teaching Jiu Jitsu would go hand in hand with fostering meaningful relationships. The school opened its doors seven months later in Gates, driven by a commitment to humility and service alongside the martial art itself. Instruction at Shogun West covers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with foundational classes designed for adults new to the sport as well as regular Jiu Jitsu sessions for all levels. Kids have their own gi classes, and the schedule also includes striking lessons, reflecting a broader approach to self-defense and martial training. Open mat sessions are available for all students to drill and spar freely, encouraging practical experience beyond structured classes. The academy operates from a wheelchair-accessible facility, welcoming drop-in students without restrictions. While the instructors take their teaching seriously, they emphasize that building trust and respect with each person who walks through the door is just as important as any technique passed on. Shogun West’s story and daily practice are closely tied to the values of family, faith, and humility that inspired its founding.
