Claim this gymRenzo Gracie East Side Martial Arts was founded by a team of experienced martial artists with deep roots in New York City’s jiu-jitsu scene. Head instructor and co-founder Mike Jaramillo, a 5th-degree black belt, leads the academy alongside fellow co-founders David Cheung, Athan Siamas, and Cynthia Yang. The school was built to bring authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, with an emphasis on technical instruction and making BJJ accessible to a wide range of students. The instructor team also includes Amadeo Bugatti, David Monserrate, Eugene Thong, and Rob Rybak, each contributing their own teaching experience and specialty to the mat. The class schedule at Renzo Gracie East Side is designed for busy New Yorkers, with sessions offered every day of the week. Adult students can train in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with classes that focus on fundamentals as well as specialized topics like leg locks. Open mat times give members additional opportunities to train at their own pace. The academy also offers striking classes, including Muay Thai and kickboxing, and will continue to provide Muay Thai instruction through private lessons starting in June 2026. Visitors are welcome to drop in for classes, and the school encourages new students to schedule a private introduction to help them get started. The kids’ program is a central part of the academy, offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for children as young as three years old, along with striking classes for all ages. Kids are introduced to BJJ in the gi and can borrow equipment for their first class to make the transition easy. The youth program is led by instructors like Drew Johnson and Rob Rybak, who focus on building confidence, discipline, and technical skill in a supportive setting. The academy’s flexible approach—allowing students to arrive late or leave early when necessary—reflects its practical understanding of life in the city, while maintaining a consistent commitment to quality instruction.
