Pura Vida BJJ & MMA in Milwaukee was built around the idea that martial arts training should help every member grow—on and off the mats. Owners Zak Ottow and Jake Klipp bring decades of experience as competitors, coaches, and lifelong martial artists. Zak, a UFC veteran and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, shares his hard-won knowledge from the fight world with students at every level. Jake, a Marine Corps veteran and former wrestler, found his passion for grappling through BJJ and has been teaching and competing in both grappling and MMA since 2008. The academy’s philosophy is simple: leave your stress and ego at the door, focus on the training, and improve your body and mind with every class. Training at Pura Vida covers the full spectrum of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. Fundamental BJJ classes are offered in both gi and no-gi formats, giving beginners a strong technical base before they move on to advanced sessions. For those looking to sharpen their skills, advanced no-gi classes and open mat sessions provide plenty of time to roll and refine techniques. The academy’s MMA program includes dedicated competition team practices and advanced striking classes led by experienced coaches like Solo Acosta, whose background spans Muay Thai, boxing, and MMA, and who is known for a technical, analytical approach to striking. Youth programs are a major part of the academy’s identity. Led by black belt Courtnie Korpela, one of the first women in Wisconsin to earn her BJJ black belt, the kids’ BJJ program emphasizes accessibility and growth for young grapplers. The youth MMA program, coached by undefeated pro Ben Schauer, balances skill-building with discipline and fun.
