Poway Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Jeff Mata, a black belt certified under Hall of Famer Baret Yoshida and one of only three blind BJJ black belts in the United States. Born and raised in Poway, Mata brings a rare combination of elite-level experience and resilience to the mats, including international competition for Team USA in Paralympic Judo and completion of multiple Ironman triathlons. His unique perspective shapes the academy’s approach to training, emphasizing that discipline and heart matter more than physical sight. The academy offers a full schedule that includes adult and kids classes in both gi and no-gi formats. Adult fundamentals classes provide structured instruction for those newer to the art, while open mat sessions give students of all levels a chance to drill and spar freely. Kids programs are split between gi and no-gi training, accommodating different preferences and skill sets. Drop-ins are accepted, and the facility is wheelchair accessible, reflecting the school’s commitment to inclusivity. Training at Poway Jiu Jitsu centers on developing practical skills for fitness, self-defense, and competition. While the academy maintains traditional gi classes as the foundation, no-gi sessions complement the curriculum to round out grappling versatility. The coaching staff includes brown belt Millan Mateo and Mike Rein, supporting Mata in delivering a consistent, focused curriculum. The school’s long-standing local roots and distinctive leadership create an environment where perseverance and adaptability are key values on and off the mats.
