Payback Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Antonio Velazquez, a black belt under Bryant Pangelinan with over 14 years of experience on the mats. Antonio’s background includes long stints training at Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu in San Jose under Matt Darcy and Dave Camarillo, and later at Sabre Jiu-Jitsu in the East Bay. He brings a practical teaching style that balances competition-tested techniques with an emphasis on discipline, strategy, and steady progress. The academy opened as the first Jiu-Jitsu school in Pittsburg and was formally recognized by the city for its work with local youth and dedication to building character through martial arts. Classes at Payback cover both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults and kids, with youth programs starting as young as five years old. The gi classes focus on traditional technique, positional control, and self-defense, while the no-gi sessions integrate wrestling elements for a faster pace and competition readiness. The academy runs open mat sessions that allow students to drill and spar freely, supporting skill development beyond formal class time. The youth curriculum teaches basic takedowns, escapes, and submissions while encouraging focus and respect.
