Claim this gymOrigem Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Bondi Junction carries a strong family lineage, with its roots tracing directly back to Grandmaster Helio Gracie. The academy was originally founded in Brazil in 1998 by Coral Belt Grandmaster Guilherme Doria Machado, who received his black belt from Helio Gracie himself. Now led in Sydney by his son, Leonardo Machado, a 4th dan black belt, Origem continues to focus on keeping the core traditions and values of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu alive, placing a strong emphasis on respect, discipline and the development of character through martial arts. Classes at Origem are structured to suit a wide range of students, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. The academy offers a comprehensive 6-week introductory course, regular fundamentals sessions, advanced gi classes, and no-gi training. Kids and teens have their own dedicated programs, where the focus is not just on technique but also on building confidence and social skills. Women’s classes are led by coach Carol Mello, providing a supportive space for women to learn self-defence and progress in BJJ. The coaching team includes specialists for wrestling, no-gi and technical instruction, reflecting a broad and practical approach to grappling. Training at Origem is designed to build both physical ability and mental resilience. The facility is kept clean and welcoming, and open mats and private lessons are available for those seeking extra practice or individual attention. Community plays a central role at the academy, and students are encouraged to support one another’s growth, both on and off the mats. The school’s presence in Bondi Junction is part of a wider network with facilities in Brazil and overseas, but the focus remains on delivering authentic, high-quality Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the local Sydney community.
