Founded in 1995 by Brian J. Johnson, Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy stands as one of Seattle’s oldest and largest BJJ schools. Johnson is a 5th-degree black belt under Rigan Machado and a 3-time world champion, bringing a direct Machado lineage and decades of experience to his instruction. The school operates out of a 4000-square-foot facility near Green Lake, and Johnson’s longstanding presence in the Seattle Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene has shaped the academy’s steady, technical approach to training. Alongside structured classes, the academy offers open mat sessions for adults, where drop-ins are welcome. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the class schedule is arranged to support families, working professionals, and serious competitors alike.
