Ballard Jiu Jitsu

Ballard Jiu Jitsu was founded to bring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts to Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, with a strong emphasis on technical instruction and building a welcoming, skill-focused training environment for adults and kids alike. The academy’s programs reflect the vision of a team of dedicated instructors, including Paul Gutierrez, Bevin McLeod, Matthew Hill, and others, who guide students through gi and no-gi classes, as well as striking and MMA fundamentals. Training at Ballard Jiu Jitsu covers all levels, from fundamentals to advanced, with dedicated classes in both gi and no-gi led by experienced coaches. Specialized sessions include women’s-only BJJ with Bevin McLeod, LGBTQ-focused classes led by Gwen Roote, and structured Q&A classes that give students a chance to dig deeper into technique and strategy. The kids’ program, taught by John Gray, introduces younger students to the art in a supportive, age-appropriate setting. For those interested in expanding their skills beyond grappling, striking instruction is also available under Manuel Vazquez. The academy maintains a steady schedule of open mat sessions, including a regular community open mat that welcomes drop-ins from across the Seattle area.
