Mooresville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Mooresville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in 2019 and brings together a team of five black belt instructors with deep roots in the art. The academy is a Tom DeBlass affiliate, with lineage running through Ricardo Almeida to Renzo Gracie, and is led by co-owners Mike Bertram and Luke Moeller. Mike Bertram holds his black belt under Master Luiz Palhares and has spent nearly a decade teaching both adults and children, blending his expertise in anatomy with his coaching. Luke Moeller earned his black belt from Tom DeBlass and began his journey at Ocean County BJJ in 2012. The staff also includes Matt Jameson and Mike Peters, both black belts with engineering backgrounds, and Brooke Bertram, who has competed successfully in both BJJ and wrestling. Joseph Torres, a retired NYPD officer and black belt in Judo and Japanese Jujitsu, coaches the kids' program. Classes at Mooresville BJJ are built around hands-on instruction and practical progression. Adults can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with classes ranging from fundamentals to advanced no-gi and dedicated competition sessions. Live rolling and strategy are regular parts of the curriculum. Kids’ programs are split by age group (5–7 and 8–12), with both gi and no-gi options, and are led by instructors with real competitive and teaching experience. The academy also offers free introductory classes for both kids and adults, making it easy for newcomers to step onto the mat. Beyond regular training, Mooresville BJJ supports the broader community with Heroes Jiu-Jitsu—a free weekly class for veterans, first responders, and teachers—and participates in the Adopt A Cop BJJ initiative, providing complimentary training for active-duty officers. The academy welcomes families and offers a straightforward approach to membership, with no contracts or hidden fees. Classes run throughout the week at their wheelchair-accessible location on Overhill Drive.
