Midtown Krav Maga & Jiu Jitsu was founded in Memphis by Josh Metcalf, a Memphis native with a third-degree black belt in Krav Maga and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After fifteen years of teaching and competing across martial arts—including Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, MMA, and kickboxing—Josh opened the academy in July 2021, determined to create a place where quality self-defense and martial arts training could thrive even in challenging times. The school quickly expanded, doubling its facility size and adding a robust Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program in 2023. The Jiu Jitsu program is led by black belt professors Amanda Rathbone and Randy McGill, both accomplished international competitors with a passion for technical instruction and student development. Classes cover both gi and no-gi formats, with options for adults, teens, and children. Youth classes are organized by age and experience, including beginner, advanced, and grey belt+ groups, while teens have their own dedicated sessions. Adult students can train in fundamentals, open mat, and advanced classes, and the schedule includes regular open mats for extra practice and cross-training. Alongside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the academy offers a full slate of Krav Maga classes for all levels, fitness kickboxing, stand-up sparring, and circuit training. The coaching team includes specialists in both striking and grappling, and students benefit from individualized feedback and a focus on practical self-defense. Midtown Krav Maga & Jiu Jitsu welcomes drop-ins and is wheelchair accessible, providing a well-structured training environment for anyone serious about martial arts in Memphis.
