Claim this gymLegacy 31 Combat & Fitness in Valdosta, Georgia, carries a story that stretches back over two decades. The academy’s roots begin with Mike Mason, who opened White Tiger Martial Arts Academy in 2003. Court Shaw, who started training at White Tiger as a child, eventually purchased the gym in 2023 and renamed it Legacy 31 to honor both his brother, Brannon Shaw, and the work of his longtime mentor. Over time, the school’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program was shaped by Matt Perreira, who later founded Ohana Jiu-Jitsu, and by veteran black belt and professional MMA fighter Mike Budnick, who became a partner in the gym’s next chapter. Today, Legacy 31 is part of Legacy Performance Center—a merger that reunites the area’s martial arts history and continues the legacy of its founding coaches. The academy offers a broad schedule focused on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in both gi and no-gi for adults, teens, and children. Classes start as young as “Lil Kids” and progress through Kids BJJ, Teen BJJ, and adult programs. Women’s BJJ classes provide dedicated instruction, and there are specific competition and drilling sessions for both teens and adults. In addition to BJJ, Legacy 31 runs striking (kickboxing and Muay Thai), MMA grappling, and yoga, reflecting a commitment to both martial arts and overall fitness. Open mat sessions are available almost daily, and visitors from other gyms are welcomed with a donation-based mat fee policy. Legacy 31’s class structure is designed to meet the needs of families and serious practitioners alike, with early morning, midday, and evening options throughout the week. The academy’s journey—from its beginnings as White Tiger, through the influence of instructors like Mike Mason and Matt Perreira, to its present as Legacy Performance Center—anchors its approach to training: honoring the past while building something lasting for the future.
