Laviano Jiu Jitsu

Laviano Jiu Jitsu has been a fixture in Albany since 2015, known for its family-led, practical approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. The academy is headed by Jamie Laviano, a black belt under Renato Tavares, who brings more than 20 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, traditional striking arts, wrestling, and MMA. The Laviano family’s vision is clear: to guide students of all ages toward real self-improvement through martial arts, with a strong emphasis on discipline, confidence, and practical self-defense. The school represents the Renato Tavares Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association and is supported by a team of experienced instructors, including black belt Kyle Nichols and several brown and purple belts. Classes at Laviano Jiu Jitsu are structured to serve a wide range of students, starting as young as age three in the Tiny Warriors program. The academy offers age-specific instruction: Kids Smalls (ages 5–7), Kids Juniors (8–12), Teen Fundamentals and Teen No-Gi (13–17), and Adult classes (18+), both in gi and no-gi formats. There are dedicated programs for homeschoolers, women’s only BJJ, and fitness kickboxing, along with a Cardio MMA class for teens and adults. The curriculum is built around self-defense fundamentals, with more advanced and competition-oriented techniques introduced as students progress. Laviano Jiu Jitsu also provides regular open mats for adults and welcomes visitors. The school offers a summer camp for children and is wheelchair accessible. With a close-knit coaching team and a focus on personal growth through the martial arts lifestyle, Laviano Jiu Jitsu continues to serve Albany and surrounding communities as a family-driven academy rooted in traditional BJJ values.
