Kuleana BJJ

Kuleana BJJ opened its doors in 2022 in Sunnyvale, California, with a clear focus on responsibility—the meaning behind its Hawaiian name. The academy’s instructors bring decades of combined experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, emphasizing safety and steady progress. From the start, Kuleana has offered structured programs for all ages, including kids’ classes beginning at age five, women’s-only sessions, and advanced training for competitors. Wrestling and judo fundamentals are also part of the curriculum, integrated to complement the grappling skills taught. Students at Kuleana rotate through gi and no-gi classes that cover fundamentals through advanced techniques. The gi classes focus on grips, control, and submissions, while the no-gi sessions incorporate leg attacks and dynamic movement with wrestling and judo elements. Women’s classes are held separately in both gi and no-gi formats, aiming to provide a focused environment for female practitioners. The academy also supports competition training with coached classes and a team that regularly competes in IBJJF and local tournaments. Beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kuleana offers a full Muay Thai program, including fundamental, clinch, sparring, and advanced striking classes. The facility on Sonora Court features one of the largest mat spaces in the Bay Area, supporting over 30 classes weekly plus open mat sessions. This setup allows students to train at their own pace, whether they’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or preparing for competition.
