Jinsendo Martial Arts

At Jinsendo Martial Arts, students in Smyrna experience Gracie Jiu-Jitsu directly under the direction of black belt Sensei Randy McElwee, who also leads Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Athens. The Jiu-Jitsu program is a recent addition to the academy, bringing in McElwee’s extensive experience and practical approach. Classes are available for both adults and youth, with sessions ranging from fundamentals to intermediate Jiu-Jitsu, as well as open mat training. Kids can start early in the dedicated youth classes, while adults have options for both structured instruction and less formal practice. Jinsendo was founded and is operated by Sensei Toru Shimoji, a 5th dan in traditional Shotokan Karate. Born in Okinawa and raised in Hawaii, Shimoji began his training as a child, moved to Los Angeles in 1982, and studied directly under Hidetaka Nishiyama. He became a member of Nishiyama’s teaching staff and competed as part of the U.S. National Team, earning several kata titles. The academy’s broader philosophy, “Jinsendo,” emphasizes actualizing human potential and fostering mutual respect, shaped by Shimoji’s decades of study and teaching. Alongside its Jiu-Jitsu program, Jinsendo offers a full slate of traditional karate for children and adults, including a preschool “Yoji” class. The dojo welcomes visitors to stop by, meet the instructors, and try a class. Located on Roswell Street, Jinsendo serves Smyrna and the surrounding communities, maintaining a schedule that supports both serious martial artists and families looking for structured, long-term training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate.
