Gracie Barra Flagstaff Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense is a family-run academy shaped by decades on the mat and a deep connection to the Gracie Barra tradition. Professor Max Goldberg, a 4th degree black belt, began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 1997 and joined Gracie Barra under Professor Eduardo de Lima in 1999. Alongside his son, Professor Max Goldberg II—who earned his black belt from Master Carlos Gracie Jr.—and Coach Lucas Goldberg, the school has grown into a Flagstaff fixture for structured, detail-oriented instruction, rooted in both competition experience and a lifelong dedication to the art. The academy follows the established Gracie Barra curriculum, offering a clear progression for students of all levels. Adults start with the GB1 Fundamentals program, which builds a strong base in self-defense and core techniques, before moving into advanced (GB2) and expert (GB3) classes as they gain experience. For children, the GBK Kids Program introduces young students to jiu-jitsu through age-appropriate classes that emphasize discipline, respect, and confidence. Coach Karen Patterson leads the women’s self-defense program, combining her background in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to provide a focused and supportive introduction for women new to the art. Training at Gracie Barra Flagstaff centers on gi-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with additional no-gi elements introduced at the advanced level. The schedule includes all-levels classes, fundamentals, advanced sessions, and open mats, with drop-ins welcome. The academy is wheelchair accessible and maintains a strong emphasis on safety, consistency, and personal growth, reflecting the values that have guided the Goldberg family and their students for over two decades in the Flagstaff area.
