Averitt Jiu Jitsu in Flagstaff is led by Gregory Averitt, a first-degree black belt with over 15 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Coach Greg remains active in local and national competitions, and his approach to teaching is grounded in a growth mindset—encouraging students to embrace challenges and see setbacks as opportunities for progress. The academy’s character is shaped by his passion for sharing BJJ and by his belief that learning and improvement are lifelong pursuits, whether on the mat or in the wider community. The academy’s program is built around a clear split between gi and no-gi classes for adults, with structured sessions offered throughout the week. Live rolling is a daily expectation, reflecting the gym’s direct commitment to hands-on learning and skill development. Friday open mats are open to visitors, and there’s a dedicated women’s class on Saturdays led by Coach Jess, a purple belt under Averitt. Kids and teens have age-appropriate classes in both gi and no-gi formats, with instructors like Coach Meg and Coach Joei supporting the youth program. Competition is woven into the culture at Averitt Jiu Jitsu, but it is never a requirement for advancement. Students who want to test themselves are encouraged to compete, while newcomers and families find clear entry points and consistent guidance.
