Gary Grate BJJ in Carson City is led by Gary “Prefeito” Grate, a fifth-degree black belt under Charles Gracie. Gary’s martial arts journey began as a standout wrestler at Wooster High School, where he became Northern Nevada’s first state wrestling champion in a decade before competing multiple times at the national and Olympic trials level. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and Nevada Air National Guard, Gary immersed himself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, earning his black belt from Charles Gracie and training regularly with members of the Gracie family and other icons of the sport. His competition record includes titles at Grappler’s Quest, United Gracie, the U.S. Open, and professional MMA events, and he remains active as an instructor and referee. The academy’s programs reflect a traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu approach, with classes in the gi for both adults and children. Gary’s background in wrestling and law enforcement instruction also shapes his teaching, emphasizing practical self-defense and strong fundamentals. The kids’ program includes anti-bullying instruction, and the academy regularly offers open mat sessions where visitors are encouraged to drop in and train.
