Fort Lauderdale Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Bruce Belfield, a lifelong martial artist whose journey began at age seven under the influence of his father, a Chuck Norris black belt. Professor Belfield earned early black belts in karate and judo under Hanshi Roger Jarrett and was already teaching by the age of fifteen. He began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1993 with Royce Gracie and trained extensively with the Gracie family, earning his BJJ black belt in 2008. Before opening the academy in 2007, Belfield served as a Fort Lauderdale Police Officer and SWAT Team member, where he regularly put his martial arts knowledge to practical use. His teaching draws from decades of experience in both sport and real-world self-defense, including work with law enforcement and military personnel. Classes at Fort Lauderdale Jiu Jitsu are built around the principles of authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, with a strong focus on self-defense, character development, and practical skills that transfer beyond the mat. The academy runs separate youth and adult programs, each designed to foster confidence, discipline, and resilience. Kids and teens learn through a structured curriculum that emphasizes focus and leadership, while adults train in both the technical and self-defense aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Belfield and his team are known for their hands-on instruction and mentorship, encouraging students to progress at their own pace in a safe, ego-free setting. The school welcomes families and individuals from all backgrounds and maintains a wheelchair-accessible facility at 701 E Sunrise Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. Classes are offered throughout the week, including convenient options for working professionals and families. Fort Lauderdale Jiu Jitsu’s approach reflects Professor Belfield’s belief that martial arts are a path to personal growth as much as physical skill, with every student supported in developing resilience and confidence both on and off the mats.
