Fenix Jiu Jitsu MMA in Hickory, North Carolina, is led by Professor Jason Bebber, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Derek “TC” Richardson. Professor Bebber has been teaching Jiu Jitsu since 2005 and brings a relaxed, approachable style to his classes, while still keeping training focused and effective. His own training traces directly to Renzo Gracie through Professor Richardson, who received his black belt from Renzo in New York after years of study in multiple martial arts. The gym opened its doors in 2016 with the goal of making Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu accessible and enjoyable for everyone, whether they’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or looking to dig deeper into advanced techniques. Fenix offers a range of classes, beginning with fundamentals for newcomers, advanced sessions for experienced practitioners, and a youth program built around the Gracie Bullyproof system. Kids learn through structured games that teach core Jiu Jitsu skills while keeping things engaging. Adults can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with dedicated classes for each, as well as kickboxing for those interested in striking. Classes run throughout the day, including morning options, and the academy features the largest mat space in the area, along with heavy bags for striking and accessible facilities. Open mat sessions welcome visitors and regulars alike. At Fenix, the focus is on teaching solid fundamentals, breaking techniques down into manageable steps, and building a strong foundation for every student who walks through the door.
