1040 Gaines School Rd #113, Athens, GA
East Athens Jiu Jitsu was founded by Professor JR, who brings decades of experience from a lifelong journey in grappling. After wrestling from a young age and training martial arts in the Marines, JR earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in 2012 under Paulo Fernando following 20 years of training in San Diego. The academy opened its doors in Athens, Georgia, after JR and his wife relocated to pursue his PhD at the University of Georgia, with the goal of sharing the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu and the lessons he’s gathered from around the world. Training at East Athens centers on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with both gi and no-gi classes for adults, as well as wrestling and judo elements woven into the curriculum. The fundamentals and advanced techniques are taught in structured classes, with separate sessions for gi and no-gi formats. Open mat times give students a chance to roll, experiment, and work on their game in a relaxed setting. The academy also welcomes drop-ins, making it accessible for visiting grapplers and locals alike. Younger students, ages 10 and up, are introduced to BJJ through dedicated youth classes that emphasize respect, confidence, and coordination. The academy is wheelchair accessible and aims to make training approachable for people from all walks of life. The combination of Professor JR’s lineage, real-world experience, and thoughtful class structure shapes East Athens Jiu Jitsu into a place where students can grow on and off the mats.
