De Boa Jiu Jitsu Academy in Surprise, Arizona is led by Professor Andrew Gardineer, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Giva Santana. Andrew’s journey on the mats began in 2005 after a college basketball career, and he has since dedicated himself fully to Jiu-Jitsu—training, teaching, and competing both locally and internationally. He brings over a decade of teaching experience and is the only Brazilian black belt instructor in the Surprise area. Andrew also serves as a certified IBJJF and NABJJF referee, ensuring his students stay up-to-date with competition standards and techniques. Classes at De Boa are organized to support steady growth at every level. Adults can train in traditional gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with over a dozen classes each week, including specialized competition sessions and four open mats for extra practice. The kids’ program is structured by age and experience, with both foundational and advanced classes for children and teens. The academy also offers private training and a dedicated women’s class led by Leslie Gardineer, herself a Giva Santana black belt and multiple-time champion, who has been running the women’s program for over eight years. Instruction at De Boa is hands-on, with Andrew teaching the main classes and overseeing the youth and women’s programs. Several assistant instructors—ranging from blue to black belt—help ensure every student gets guidance appropriate to their experience. The academy emphasizes technical growth, self-defense, and the value of discipline and respect. Drop-ins are welcome for both classes and open mats, and the facility is wheelchair accessible.
